NYC Math Fail: A disturbing piece in today’s New York Daily News about the fact that a huge number of CUNY students cannot do basic math. 90% of CUNY students tested could not do a simple algebra problem, and only a third of them could convert a fraction to a decimal. With 70% of CUNY students coming from New York City schools, what does this say about our public school system or what Bloomberg has (or hasn’t) done in the last eight years to improve it?
How can we expect to compete in the new global economy with such systemic failure? Kind of makes me want to be a math teacher.
